If you’re an architect or designer, you’ll know that the projects which appear the simplest are often the most technically demanding.
Large, uninterrupted timber surfaces look effortless; but achieving that seamless appearance requires extraordinary precision behind the scenes.
Our latest project challenged us to combine book-matched burr veneer feature panels with slip-matched framing veneers, creating panels significantly larger than any naturally occurring burr could ever produce. The finished result appears as though it has been crafted from a single piece of timber. In reality, it’s the product of careful planning, specialist craftsmanship and engineering measured in fractions of a millimetre.
The Challenge
To create oversized burr veneer panels with uninterrupted grain flow, framed by perfectly aligned slip-matched veneers that maintained visual continuity across multiple doors and elevations.
Every veneer leaf had to be selected from the same flitch, carefully orientated, and indexed so the natural figure flowed seamlessly from one panel to the next. Even the slightest misalignment would be immediately visible.
The Solution
Using specialised veneering techniques, we achieve what solid timber simply cannot.
Each veneer leaf is hand-selected from the flitch pack before being precision guillotine-cut to create perfectly clean edges. These ultra-fine 0.6mm veneer edges are then expertly joined, glued and taped prior to pressing onto a stable substrate under controlled pressure and temperature.
The result is a panel where every leaf remains perfectly positioned throughout manufacture, preserving the natural grain pattern while delivering exceptional dimensional stability.
Book matching creates the dramatic mirrored symmetry that highlights the natural beauty of burr veneer, while slip matching keeps adjacent framing veneers flowing in the same direction for a clean, contemporary appearance. Selecting the correct matching technique is just as important as selecting the veneer itself, and both require careful planning long before fabrication begins.
Why This Matters for Your Next Project
Beautiful joinery should perform just as well in ten years as it does on installation day.
By engineering both the substrate and the veneering process with exceptional precision, we deliver:
• Zero Telegraphing – A perfectly flat, mirror-like finish without imperfections transferring through the veneer.
• Climate Stability – Engineered substrates minimise movement, helping large panels resist warping and seasonal expansion.
• Visual Continuity – Grain and figure flow seamlessly across doors, drawers and adjoining panels, creating one cohesive architectural statement.
When every detail aligns, the craftsmanship becomes almost invisible.
That’s the hallmark of truly exceptional joinery.
Because while luxury is seen in the finish, it’s built into the engineering long before the first panel is installed.
