Master cabinet maker or master problem solver?

Master cabinet maker or master problem solver?

The 7-meter cabinet conundrum, and why the best cabinet makers are both.

Being a good cabinet maker is not just about crafting beautiful furniture with precision; especially when dealing with fitted pieces, architect-led projects, and highly detailed interiors. A huge part of the job is anticipating problems before they happen and problem-solving in real time.

Recently, we took on a commission for a stunning 7-metre-long media cabinet which, on paper, looked like a masterpiece of clean lines and luxury finishes.

In reality, it was a logistical puzzle.

The design had to accommodate a mammoth 98-inch integrated television, complex cabling routes, sockets, existing plumbing runs, and strict clearance requirements for a feature fireplace; all while maintaining access for future servicing and maintenance.

Then came the invisible challenges:
• Heat protection and thermal shielding
• Combustion clearance regulations
• Ventilation requirements
• Coordination with heating specialists and other trades

These are the details clients rarely see, but they are often the difference between a smooth installation and a costly disaster.

In the world of high-end joinery, what isn’t shown on the drawing can be just as important as what is.

When technical constraints are overlooked during the early design stages, the consequences can be significant:

  1. Costly remakes – because premium materials rarely allow for quick on-site fixes.
  2. Project delays — installations stall while services are rerouted or cabinetry is modified.
  3. Compromised safety — particularly around heat sources, fireplaces, and flue systems.

At John George Fine Cabinetry, we see ourselves as more than makers. We are technical problem solvers and we thrive when brought into projects early, working collaboratively with architects, designers, builders, and specialist trades.

By identifying these “invisible constraints” during the survey and CAD stages, we help avoid weeks of disruption and thousands in unforeseen costs.

Ultimately, the best designs don’t just look beautiful — they work seamlessly.
